Kenya Weaver Bird
Ltd is a small hand weaving workshop located in Nairobi, Kenya.
It was started by myself in
1983. I come from a small town in Kansas and in 1971 I hitchhiked to Kenya from
New York where I had been working as an interior designer. I started the weaving
as a means of getting high quality furnishing fabrics for my contracts in Kenya
as there was limited importation at the time. Over the years I increased my
range to include clothes, carpets and wall hangings. This web site is the first
time I have opened my things up for export.
I
have a very limited production and do not want to loose control over the
quality. I employ approximately 30
people full time in the weaving workshop itself. I have spinners all over Kenya
spinning the wool yarn we use. In
the early 90’s I got a local textile industry to spin a fine soft wool yarn
for my light weight curtain fabrics as well as clothes.
All the of the items are designed by myself and my staff.
We custom mix and dye the colours we want and than hand weave and
applique the fabric.
Aside from the sort of items you will see on this web site we make fabric
for upholstery, bedspreads and curtains.
In limited quantities we are
able to custom design your entire house or hotel rooms with the different
qualities of fabrics, carpets and wall hangings .
We have a range of hand spun yarns in either
the natural form or a limited range of colours.
If you are interested in more information on the fabrics and yarns please
contact us at kinanda@
wananchi .com. If you purchase one
of our items I hope you will enjoy
it as much as we have enjoyed creating it.
